Lionheart Theatre Company A Brief History
|
Lionheart Theatre Company is the proverbial dream-come-true for founding members, and
long-time Gwinnett residents, J. Michael and Tanya Carroll. Their vision was to establish a
community theater that offered affordable entertainment, and encouraged the participation
of community members in all aspects of theatrical production. It remains Lionheart’s goal
to elevate the spirit of community by enriching the cultural experiences of its members.
Lionheart Theatre Company, based in Gwinnett County, is a nonprofit, 501-3c, all-
volunteer, community theater. Its history is rooted in the drama ministry at Norcross
Presbyterian Church (NPC), where Tanya
Carroll has served as Artistic Director since 1994. Offering theatrical productions in a
number of formats, The NPC Players, as they were then known, also toured surrounding
communities as the "Suitcase
Players." In 2000, this dedicated group of actors, designers and stage technicians made
the "leap of faith" into the community at large, and formally organized as Lionheart Theatre
Company.
J. Michael Carroll began his acting career with The Alliance Theatre’s 1975 Studio
Company, and studied voice under Mary-Nell Santacroce before attending the University
of Georgia as a drama major in 1976. Michael has appeared in more than thirty-five Atlanta-
area stage productions.
Tanya Carroll is a graduate of Georgia Southern University where she received her
Bachelors degree in Theatre. Tanya has produced and/or directed numerous theatrical
productions for both Norcross Presbyterian Church and Lionheart Theatre Company.
Tanya is the Artistic Director for Lionheart Theatre Company.
In 2003, Lionheart was introduced to entrepreneurs Terry and Sherry Robinson, and found
a home at the Royal Arts Gallery located in downtown Norcross. It quickly became the site
of several sell-out Lionheart productions. A victims of its own success, however,
resulted in Lionheart “venue hopping" in search larger spaces to accommodate
enthusiastic audiences for its 2005 season. In addition to THE ROYAL, Lionheart has
staged productions at Jacqueline Casey Children's Performing Arts Center, The Limelight
Galley at Binders in Buckhead, The Berkeley Lake Chapel, Norcross Pres. Church,
Thrasher Park, Duluth Festival Center, Suwannee Amphitheatre and the Flying Saucer
Restaurant in Lawrenceville.
Lionheart understands that affordable ticket pricing is especially attractive for folks who
hope to find quality, family entertainment in their own back yard. Lionheart’s $15.00 ticket
price, with discounts for Senior, Kids and groups, includes a homemade dessert and
beverage.
Lionheart has a track record of giving back to the community in a variety of ways. We
have used our productions to solicit contributions for Norcross Cooperative Ministries.
We have supported Plant a Row for the Hungry and The American Diabetes Association,
the local foster children's program and Relay for Life.
Community theatre allows folks who have experienced the theatre in high school or
college to put there skills back to work and still have a day job and time with the family.
Adults and kids alike who have always wanted to give acting a try have a place in which to
do it without feeling intimidated. There is something for everyone to do from, sewing to
painting, building and baking, acting to searching for props. So come, join Lionheart ,
where we form bonds and memories that will last a lifetime.
